Graffiti from Rio de Janeiro, photographed by Savitri Sedlacek and Kaizo Iwakami Beltrao, is the basis of the imagery on the tiles and boxes on this page.
It is the essence of asemic writing, visually powerful but without precise semantic content. It appropriates devanagari calligraphy in a way that I knew was unreadable but, nevertheless, made me stop and try to decipher it each time I passed various renditions on the walls of Rio. Of course, I was reading it; just not as an Indian language.
